What things to Avoid whenever You’re Applying (or how exactly to conquer your senior autumn)

What things to Avoid whenever You’re Applying (or how exactly to conquer your senior autumn)

Enough time had come. My bachelor’s degree had been newly in hand, and I decided to accept the job that is first was being offered ( it absolutely was the Great Recession and the fear of unemployment was very real). Thankfully, working together with highschool seniors as they navigated the college application process turned out to be a great fit for me! I discovered many things working at a high school (did you know there is an app that calculates the likelihood you’ll obtain a snow day?!), and each fall was a course in how difficult it’s to become a 12th grader.

Senior is tough year! You are in your hardest classes to date, you are accepting increasingly more responsibilities, you’re hitting a milestone nearly every week…and then you are asked by us to college. 12th grade may never be effortless, you can easily make it less hard. Though each pupil’s college procedure is unique, there are a handful of behaviors/mind sets that I have experienced cause unneeded stress time and time again. Some call them the Four Horseman of the Common Appocalypse (and by some I mean me), but they have been all avoidable if you know how exactly to recognize the signs!

Focusing too much on that which you can’t change.

Can you keep worrying about that C you got in freshman English? Are you regretting your choice to quit the track team? Many students invest their senior fall focusing on the past, and it drains their time and energy like Snapchat drains my phone battery. Rather than stressing about things you cannot change, take your time writing a well thought out essay, striving for great senior 12 months grades, and putting together the most useful application you can. Think upward and onward!

Ignoring the advice of your elders.

Would you nod as soon as your therapist speaks then instantly wipe the conversation from your own memory? Do you reject your parents’ guidance like it is your task? I am shocked…really, I’m. Keep in head that, while they might not always be ‘hip and with it,’ the adults in your life can provide important insight into your application procedure (and also help you identify your strengths and that means you can better highlight them). Ignoring their advice can cut you removed from some pretty information that is valuable so why don’t you take all of the help you’ll get?

Dropping in love.

No, we’m not speaking about the lab partner you’ve possessed a crush on for decades (them already) though you should really just tell! I am discussing the head-over-heels students that are feeling get for one university on their list. There’s a difference between having a very first choice and being so fixated for a school which you can not even fathom going anywhere else. It is called the school process for a reason—no one knows exactly how it shall end! Though I sincerely hope you might be admitted to your top choice (and obviously I hope your top choice is USC), I strongly encourage you to help keep an open mind in order to find a quantity of institutions you’ll love to wait.

Avoidance.

Have you been leaving things towards the minute that is last? Are you currently putting off looking up what supplementary essays you need to create? Have you been reading this post on 14th january? You are procrastinating! Despite what you may tell yourself, no one works best under pressure (trust me…this is a ‘do as I say, not as I do’ situation). Numerous drafts are the key up to a good essay, and making significant progress before the eleventh hour is the only real defense against an application that is sloppy. You have got enough in your plate senior year. If you don’t have a plan yet for how you will finish most of your essays, supplements, applications, etc. make one! That you don’t wish to rush (or worse, forget something) in this method. So stop scanning this web log and get to work— you are known by me can do it!

Pupil Highlight: USC Student Body President, Edwin Saucedo

Hey All,

It’s Natalie Guevara and I’m excited to begin working with our weblog. While discovering subject ideas, I thought of common concerns we get from prospective students and one of my favorites is often: exactly what’s it want to be a learning pupil at USC? And although I’m an alumna of the college and had my own great experiences…I actually want you to listen to from current pupils with a bigger range of majors/involvement/background/etc. So rather than hear about most of the cool things I need to say (many of you get enough of that), I’ll find current students to inform you about their experiences. The student Body President for the Undergraduate Student Government for our first installment, we have Edwin Saucedo. He is originally from South Gate, CA and is set to graduate this May that is coming 2017. Here is what he previously to state:

Four years back, I found myself where many of you may well be right now: frustrated with my personal statement and tired of looking for the college that is perfect. It absolutely was hard enough trying to navigate university applications when neither of my parents talked English or had pursued degree themselves. The stress of finding the best place to spend the next four years was extremely overwhelming.

Than I could have ever expected as I think back at my college application process the first thing I have to say is, everything worked out better. Whenever I applied to college we never ever thought I would personally wind up at USC. I expanded up in South Gate, CA where only 6% associated with the population that is total a college degree. It’s obvious, We never imagined i’d find myself being the Student Body President my senior year right here. The four years in between my senior year of high school and senior year of college have induced a quantity of classes, experiences, and friendships we never expected. However, the combination of most these life that is unexpected has indeed led me to where I am today.

Being Student Body President at probably one of the most prestigious universities into the country can be an daunting job. It is not easy trying to express nearly 19,000 students who result from over 100 different countries, are of all different races, and have extremely diverse backgrounds that are economic. However, it really is additionally a tremendously opportunity that is rewarding. Every day we have to go into our student government office and get myself: how to get this to college a better place for all pupils? That is our goal in student government, to create the most effective undergraduate experience, and that’s why I made the decision to run for this place spring that is last.

I invest at least twenty hours every week listening to students’ experiences, asking them just how I possibly could be of any service, and connecting them to your channels that are proper this https://shmoop.pro/ campus. On the other side of things, we advocate on the behalf to administration in efforts generate better campus policies, address any presssing issues, and plan for future years of our campus. My part that is favorite however taking the info we discovered from both students and administrators and coming up with unique solutions to addressing these issues.

In student government we pride ourselves in being innovators and thinkers that are creative. We challenge each other’s ideas and gives suggestions about improvements. During the end of the we come up with proposals on how to address each and every issue day. It is through these creative proposals that we have been able to get our students free Uber rides from 7pm to 2 am and have gotten a regular farmers market on campus. But our work does not end there. Over the length of the 12 months our student government sets on over 300 events that are free our students. These are priced between intimate talks about our education system to bringing speakers like Laverne Cox or performers like Diplo for our students to take pleasure from.

We shape the undergraduate experience and give students the chance to explore perspectives beyond their own; because that is really what college is about. Regardless of yourself and be challenged by others whether you go to USC or choose elsewhere as your new home, dare to challenge. As President I always encounter students perspectives that differ from my own, they’re not right or wrong but different, and that is okay.

You will end up, but instead what you will do once you get there as you approach the last months of the college application process don’t worry as much about where. University is a right time for you to explore and find your passion. I came across my passion within student federal government and working towards increasing USC for current and students that are future. For you, that passion may lie in another activity. Regardless, enjoy your final months of high school and get prepared to embark in a new journey complete of unique and exciting experiences. All the best on applying to college and if you ever get disillusioned, understand that what makes Trojans strong is we always Fight On!
